X-Play: ‘Terminator Salvation’ Review When X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit screens and shelves last month, a strange thing happened. The movie got lukewarm reviews, while the game received glowing recommendations. Wolverine was fun and well-rounded, which, based on the track record of previous movie/game tie-ins, left everyone pleasantly surprised. Lightening did not strike twice with Terminator Salvation . X-Play’s James Youngblood writes: "It’s a shame that developers choose the safe and easy route rather than try to make their own mark on the series. As it is now, the scope of Salvation feels more like a side mission of something much bigger. There’s no build up to a final battle or deep insight into how a boy from the valley became the last hope for mankind. I’m only to tell you this throughout this entire post. According to Brighthand , Best Buy is offering Palm Pre buyers the chance to undercut Sprint’s own $100 mail-in rebate offer, by offering the phones for the post-rebate price of $200 right at checkout (with a two-year contract of course). How Best Buy was able to secure such an offer is curious, especially since the phone will also be available at Wal-Mart, Radio Shack and Sprint stores (the exclusive carrier at this point). Never mind who Best Buy had to put in the ground to pull this off, it’s good news for potential Palm Pre users out there. Now there’s just the small issue of actually being able to get your hands on one. I wonder where the biggest line will be… Anyone planning on picking up a Pre on day one? Resident Evil 5 is a huge, hit game, but, apparently, there aren’t enough costume changes involved in the survival-horror title. Capcom may be remedying that situation with the addition of some new clothing for Chris and Sheva. But rather than just telling you what the characters are going to be wearing, Capcom is trusting gamers’ instincts here, and throwing this one up to the readers of its blog , posting: "We might even get some new RE5 content, in some form or another. Supposing that happened, and if just maaaaaybe we were thinking about adding some new costumes for Chris and Sheva, what do you think we should do? Sheva in Jill’s S.T.A.R.S. outfit? Chris in Guile’s fatigues? Sheva in Felicia’s outfit? Do your worst, internet!" First off, way to be decisive, Capcom! Secondly, challenging the internet to do its worst is really, really bad idea. I’ve seen the internet’s worst, and it isn’t pretty. I’m sure you’re really curious as to how I would dress Chris and Sheva. Well, even though Capcom’s blog specifically suggests crossovers from other Capcom games, I feel very strongly that depressive 19th Century Swedish playwrights are not represented enough in video games, so I suggest Chris be outfitted with an August Strindberg costume. As for Sheva: How about Phoenix Wright? We’ve all seen Phoenix strongly object to things, but wouldn’t it be cool if he pulled out a shotgun and was like, "Hey, Judge, overrule this !"? Mainstream Concepts of Design In order for products and services to attract the attention of potential customers, designers use stereotypes to get their message across. However, despite its popularity, using stereotypes to communicate messages may sometimes cause harm rather than good.
Steven Heller, an author of popular books on design and the co-chair of the MFA Design Program of the School of Visual Arts, was asked about his views on the role of stereotypes in design, and here's what he has to say:
On the power of design on stereotyping…According to Heller, it is not so much that graphic designers are "powerful" but that stereotypes are tools used by designers. In addition to the stereotypes, designers also use clichés and "timeworn symbols" to communicate messages. Individuals are naturally sensitive to negative and offensive stereotypes. Nevertheless, it has been proven that we commonly rely on signs that are generally understood by almost everyone to interact with the vast audience. This is how designers use stereotypes to create an awareness of their products and services.
On designers creating new stereotypes and catering to existing ones…It's very obvious when designers use existing stereotypes, Heller said. You'd be able to easily recognize one. Unless a client specifically says that stereotyping is what he wants, then it can be avoided. Again, Heller argues that it also depends on the stereotype. He advised in situations when designers can say no, it is important to lay down the terms on what can and cannot be used with regards to stereotypes.
On avoiding stereotypes…When it comes to trying to avoid stereotyping, he said that "Clichés occur with overuse. Stereotypes, the simplification of common characteristics, grow out of clichés and vice versa. It is like visual repetitive stress syndrome: it can be cured."
On creating, promoting stereotypes, and being used by others to create stereotypes…Heller advises not to do it at all. He said that it is similar to saying that your work promotes mediocrity. If it does then stop. When designers feel that their work is starting to create stereotypes, promote existing stereotypes, or being used by others to create one, then those designers should stop right away.
On the design community's responsibility to stop the use of stereotypes…The community's responsibility on stereotype depends on the message and the goal. Heller believes that stereotypes are bad when they support "ostensibly venal ideologies". Other than that, stereotypes are part of the vocabulary of how we communicate our messages. "...in a way are symbolic of their respective times."
On people accepting messages using stereotypes…People are most likely to buy into the message using stereotypes if it is particularly appealing. If they are negative then people usually reject.
